Severe storms cause 8,000 to lose power in Mecklenburg County, road flooding, flight delays at CLT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The severe storms that blew through the Charlotte area Tuesday night brought major impacts on the roads and in the air.

As of 11 p.m., there were more than 8,000 people without power around Mecklenburg County, Duke Energy reports. Half of those are in the Cotswold area along Sharon Amity Road, with another 2,000 on Mount Holly Road near Pine Island Country Club.

Those outages are expected to be restored by 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Further, northern Cleveland County saw nearly 500 outages, and a tree fell onto an Iredell County home.

People attempting to fly in and out of Charlotte Douglas had a tough time reaching their destinations during the storms. There were 79 flights delayed and 11 canceled Tuesday night. Only Atlanta’s airport and Chicago O’Hare had more.

The Doobie Brothers concert at PNC Music Pavilion was paused for lightning, but the music eventually resumed.

In addition to the wind and lightning, several roads were closed due to flooding in northwest Charlotte. A vehicle was stranded in rising waters on Idaho Drive, just off Brookshire Freeway.

More showers and storms are expected Wednesday as temperatures begin to rise through the end of the week.
