The preseason won't be a factor moving forward for one Carolina Panthers rookie.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Saturday that second-round pick, running back Jonathon Brooks, isn't expected to play in the preseason as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL that cut his final college season short.

“He’s doing great," Canales said . "I saw him running out a little bit before practice. They have a progression on him. He feels stronger and stronger every day."

Much of the Panthers' offensive success relies on the run game being effective . Brooks' health is a factor in that approach.

ACL injuries aren't what they used to be. However, they do require a lengthy recovery process. Brooks appears to be in the heart of it currently.

“He’s really focused and he’s into what we’re doing. Mentally, with our walkthroughs, just watching," Canales said. "And in the classroom and stuff, he’s been really attentive that way. So I’m happy about what he’s doing there. And then physically, this is a guy that really can make an impact for us. So, again, wanna be really smart about when we bring him back in.”

When healthy, Brooks exemplifies versatility. In his final season with the Longhorns, Brooks was named second-team All-Big 12 Conference. He was the leading rusher with 1,139 rushing yards (187 carries, 6.1 yards per carry) and 10 rushing touchdowns.

It is that production that the Panthers are hoping for. To get it, however, he first has to be healthy.

"Our system calls for a back that can be used, of course, just in a traditional way, hand it to him," Canales said earlier in the offseason . "Then, how can we get this player in space? Being able to get him in perimeter screens check downs. We got a really cool empty package where we use the backs, flex them out to get matchups, things like that."
