Much like everyone expected, the Carolina Panthers will be adding a quarterback to the roster.

It was revealed during Fan Fest that backup quarterback Andy Dalton suffered a quad injury. With preseason play starting Thursday, the injury to Dalton forced Carolina into a corner.

Head coach Dave Canales said Saturday he is prepared to add another quarterback in the mix until Dalton is healthy.

We’re definitely gonna bring a quarterback in,” Canales said after practice. “We’re working on that with our roster numbers. As we get a little bit banged up in camp, it’s just you have to create spots for those players. We have to put our brains together with the personnel and coaching staff to say where does that number come from to be able to add that quarterback. But we’re definitely gonna need him to come in and function in our first preseason game.”

On the roster, the Panthers have starting quarterback Bryce Young and undrafted rookie Jack Plummer. After Dalton's injury, Plummer earned some reps during the Fan Fest scrimmage .

Still, Canales wants another arm on the roster. As for age: He is open to a veteran or an unproven rookie at this point.

“We’re evaluating both," Canales said. "So maybe somebody with a little bit of professional experience. So he’s used to being under center, used to doing some of those things so we can really get a good look at our guys down the roster. At the end of these preseason games, we gotta be able to function and get our plays off to do that.”

An addition to the quarterback room won't threaten Young . He is still the starter. But a competition could offer the Panthers different looks at the offense throughout the preseason.
