This time of year a debate rages on around the NFL. How much time should the starting quarterback play during the preseason? Should they get a couple of series, play a quarter, play a half, or should they not play at all? The Carolina Panthers are going through these same questions in the lead up to their first preseason game on Thursday versus the New England Patriots.

Dave Canales spoke with the media following practice on Tuesday, and let them know what he had decided for preseason week one. “Bryce will not play,” Canales stated. “Then we'll take that kind of week to week and you know get a sense for do we need to get him out there in this system and kind of get a couple of series.”

Canales opened up about the quarterback situation last year in Tampa and how he handled that preseason. “Yeah, so different situation last year in Tampa we had a quarterback competition, Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield so we wanted them out there getting those opportunities. This is different, we know who our guy is and he's doing a fantastic job.”

As far as Bryce Young is concerned, he has total trust in his coach to make the right decisions. Bryce spoke following practice on Monday, “I trust in coach,” Bryce noted. “I think it's a process and, you know, I trust in whatever they feel like the process is.”

Bryce commented on what last year was like. How playing in the preseason was part of his growth. “I think it was cool, I think it was good for my development at the time,” Young said. “I think that you learn how good people are in the NFL. You know, everyone's out there preseason or regular season. It's the best of the best competing, going at it. It's the best of the best trying to do everything they can on every given down.”

Bryce reiterated his faith in the coaching staff to make the right decisions for him going forward, whether or not he plays in the preseason. “I'm super confident in, again, in whatever the coaches advise and whatever they say. Again, they've been in the league a lot longer than I have. They've been around a lot of quarterbacks, a lot of offense, a lot of teams. And you know, I trust 100 percent in what it is they choose.”

No matter what side of the argument that you stand, what truly matters is that coach and player are on the same page. In Carolina, it seems as though that is the case, for the first time in ages. Here’s to hoping it leads to great things for the Panthers.
