Carolina Panthers claim former Broncos safety on waiver wire

The Carolina Panthers added to the roster on Tuesday via the waiver wire, claiming former Denver Broncos safety Caden Sterns.

In a corresponding move, the Panthers waived offensive lineman J.D. DiRenzo with an injury designation.

Carolina putting a claim in on Sterns wasn’t too hard to see coming. He did, after all, play for Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero with the Broncos, so adding talent at a position of need who has some built-in familiarity with staff and scheme is a wise move.

Sterns was a fifth-round pick back in 2021 and made five starts with four interceptions over 21 total appearances. He suffered a torn patellar tendon in the opener last season and is all the way back now, albeit with a new team.

Those Panthers want some additional depth and considering they boasted the first pick in the waiver wire order, felt pretty strongly about what Sterns can bring to the table behind the likes of Xavier Woods and Jordan Fuller.
