‘Built on dreams’: Local brewpub nestled in old fire station closes after one year

The Charlotte area is saying goodbye to yet another brewery.

One year after opening its doors, Firehawk Brewpub has permanently closed its space in Mount Holly.

The restaurant and brewery, known for its North Carolina wood-fired barbecue, took over the space of the town’s old historic firehouse in May 2023. Now, the family-friendly spot that the team says was “built on dreams. The dream of bringing the joy of our backyard cookouts” in a “place that highlights food grown and beers crafted” in the area has closed the doors of its dining room and brewery.

‘Firehawk is dead. Long live Firehawk.’

“Did we have the resources to execute it flawlessly? Nah. Was it worth trying anyway? Absolutely. Will we try again one day? Maybe,” the team announced on Instagram and Facebook.

“We’re enormously proud of what we were able to accomplish. And we’re eternally grateful to our community that gave us a fighting chance for the past 15 months.”

The 6,000-square-foot restaurant didn’t just have the physical space of a former firehouse, but also some fireside touches to the menu too — with woodfired dishes and the option to buy a bundle of wood and a s’mores kit.

“Being in the fire department, it seemed logical that we cook our food on live, wood-fired grills,” owner Scott Blackwood previously told CharlotteFive. “The menu is formulated from recipes from me and my wife, Erin, my parents, grandparents [and] family friends.”

Firehawk now joins the growing list of breweries that have closed around the Charlotte area— bringing the count of closures this year to eight after Twenty-Six Acres Brewing Company shut down.

Though the dining room and brewery is closed, Firehawk’s team says they’ll continue delivering catering orders booked for this week and help others find an alternative supplier.

“To our investors, thank you for taking a chance on this. To our ride-or-die crew, we love you most of all. We’ll keep burning in the backyard for now. You’re all invited. Y’all come eat.”
