CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Gretchen Walsh, a world-record-holding swimmer for the University of Virginia (UVA), has been named the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Mary Gerber Award winner.

According to a press release from Virginia Athletics, this is the third time that this award — which is presented to the ACC female student-athlete of the year — has been given to a UVA student.

Walsh helped the Cavaliers to their fifth-consecutive conference championship this season and the program’s fourth-consecutive NCAA team title. She has set four American records at the ACC Championship meet as she went on to win seven individual and relay gold medals.

Walsh is also a member of Team USA for the upcoming Paris Summer Olympic Games, as she qualified for two events by winning the 100 butterfly and finishing second in the 50 freestyle. She set the world record during the semifinals of the 100 fly, with a time of 55.18.

She will also compete at the Paris Games on U.S. relay teams.
