LANSING. Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan State Police Lansing Post released new details regarding the deadly crash in Clinton Township near a construction zone.

Investigators confirm a 33-year-old man from Grand Rapids was driving a 2019 International semi-truck west on I-96 in the right lane when he approached stopped traffic due to a slow down for a construction zone.

Investigators say the driver of the International semi-truck was not paying attention and failed to slow down, rear-ending a 2017 Chevy Cruze, driven by a 74-year-old woman from Sparta.

The collision pushed the Chevy Cruze into a 2020 Land Rover driven by a 62-year-old woman from Rockford causing it to slam into the back of a 2014 Freightliner semi-truck. The driver of the Freightliner was a 23-year-old man from Grand Rapids.

The crash caused the 2020 Land Rover to overturn in a ditch and the Chevy Cruze was then crushed between both semi-trucks, which resulted in the death of its 74-year-old driver.

The at-fault semi-truck driver, according to State Police, and the 62-year-old Land Rover driver suffered serious injuries and were transferred to a local hospital. The second semi-truck driver did not suffer any injuries.

State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said the crash caused westbound I-96 to be closed for several hours while state troopers investigated the crash and cleared up roadways.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash and the investigation is still ongoing.
