CHATHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — Summer is the season of vacationing and travel. However, that time away can result in criminals seizing the opportunity to invade your home. To help prevent this, Chatham Police are offering a free program to help keep an eye out.

Through the Chatham Police Department’s house watch program, village residents who are going on holiday can fill out a form. Officers will then scout their homes in their free time while the residents are away. Residents with vacations lasting more than two weeks will have their homes checked at least once a week.

House Watch forms should be completed and submitted within four to five business days before the resident’s departure. Forms are available online or in-person at the Chatham Police Department. They can also be printed out and brought in or faxed at 217-483-7153. Those who fax their forms should then call the department at 217-483-2453 to ensure it was received.

Chatham Police said that while the service aims to prevent home breaches and offer peace of mind to residents, it does not guarantee that crime or natural disaster will not occur.
