Munger, Fenstermaker among Cheboygan area boys athletes I'm excited to watch this fall

CHEBOYGAN – It’s early July, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting excited about fall sports .

After a thrilling 2023-24 high school sports campaign, I’m really looking forward to what should be an entertaining fall, with games starting in August.

As we wait until it all begins again, here’s the boys athletes I’m most excited to watch once fall arrives.

PRESLEY CHAMBERLAIN: Inspired by older teammates, Presley Chamberlain earns Daily Tribune softball POY honor

CONNOR WALLACE: Hard work, dedication fueled 2024 Daily Tribune baseball player of the year Connor Wallace

Luke Munger, Cheboygan Football, Senior – Following an exceptional junior season, Munger is back to lead the Chiefs on the offensive and defensive lines. A terrific all-around football player, Munger’s senior season will likely be a monster one as he’ll look to lead the Chiefs to a solid campaign under first-year coach Bill Nesbitt.

Killian Miller, Cheboygan Boys Soccer, Sophomore – Starting his career off on the front foot last year was Miller, who dazzled during a freshman season that featured a hat trick in his debut for the Chiefs. With the Chiefs moving to the Northern Shores Conference, Miller will be one of Cheboygan’s most exciting players and leaders.

Carson and Andrew Kiefer, Cheboygan Boys Cross Country, Juniors – These standout twin runners earned nods on the All–Straits Area Conference first team. With the Chiefs heading to the Northern Shores Conference, the Kiefers will have a chance to excel against tough competition.

Aidan Fenstermaker, Inland Lakes Football, Senior – Back for one last season is the electrifying Fenstermaker, who earned Michigan High School Football Coaches Association all-state first team honors and lifted Inland Lakes to a MHSAA 8-Player Division 1 runner-up showing last fall. As a senior, Fenstermaker will look to wreak havoc on opponents once more and take the Bulldogs on another magical postseason run.

Andre Bradford, Inland Lakes Football, Junior – If any Bulldog truly broke out last fall, it was Bradford who broke loose for touchdowns both rushing and on kickoff returns. As dangerous as he is offensively, he was also one of I-L's best defensive players. Barring any injuries, expect a huge junior campaign from one of the best athletes in the area.

Braylon Currie, Mackinaw City Cross Country, Junior – The All-Northern Lakes Conference first teamer is back to fuel the Mackinaw City boys. Currie, who progressed throughout an excellent sophomore campaign, will likely be aiming for state qualification for a Mackinaw City team that hopes to replace multiple runners who have graduated.

NM WOMEN'S OPEN GOLF: 'I think it will get bigger': Northern Michigan Women's Open a major golf hit in debut

SUMMER SPORTS TO WATCH: Little league, travel softball, Northern Michigan Open on tap for Cheboygan summer sports

Lelin Splan, Onaway Football, Junior – Talk about a breakout star, Lelin was it for the Cardinals, who finished with a winning record in 2023. Splan established himself as a stellar defensive end, while also becoming a receiving threat on offense. If the Cardinals take more steps in the right direction, Splan will likely be one of those leading the way.

Brach Taylor, Pellston Football, Senior – One of my favorite athletes in the area is back for one last season on the gridiron. Like some other area football players on this list, Taylor was spectacular in 2023. Whether it was catching the ball, taking snaps at quarterback, or playing defense, Taylor did it all. He’ll look to lead Pellston to a bounce-back season.
