CHEBOYGAN – Wow-wee. This was close, folks.

Throughout the Cheboygan area , plenty of girls athletes impressed during the 2023-24 high school sports year. Because of that, I’ve decided to recognize the best of the best by ranking the top girls athletes over the past year.

T1. Bella Ecker, Cheboygan – Throughout the year, this three-sport star stood out in everything she competed in.

In volleyball, she earned All-Straits Area Conference first team accolades and helped lift the Chiefs to an SAC title.

In basketball, she was one of the top players on Cheboygan's team and earned All-SAC honors.

In track and field, Ecker qualified for the Division 2 state finals in the high jump and won a conference crown in the same event. Recently, she was named the Daily Tribune’s 2024 girls track and field athlete of the year.

In terms of all-around best athlete, Ecker was right at the top.

T1. Brooklyn LaBrecque, Inland Lakes – Speaking of outstanding three-sport athletes, right there with Ecker was this Inland Lakes standout, who picked up All-Ski Valley first team accolades in volleyball, basketball and softball.

To add to that, LaBrecque played a major role in the Bulldogs winning a district title in all three sports.

Not only was LaBrecque outstanding, but she’ll also have one more year to help lift Inland Lakes to more glory.

    3. Amelia Johnson, Cheboygan – While she only played two sports as a senior, Johnson earned many accolades.

One of those came in volleyball when she was named the Daily Tribune’s 2023 player of the year, while also picking up all-region dream team accolades.

Johnson, a key member of Cheboygan’s SAC volleyball title-winning team, also helped fuel Chiefs softball to a third consecutive SAC crown.

Following an excellent senior campaign, Johnson will continue her softball career at Lansing Community College.

    4. Gracie Beauchamp, Mackinaw City – It was a great curtain call from this Mackinaw City standout, who starred in basketball and softball.

Basketball was where she impressed the most, helping the Comets to a third consecutive Northern Lakes Conference crown. In terms of elite accolades, Beauchamp was named the Daily Tribune’s player of the year and the NLC’s player of the year, while also being recognized by the Associated Press as a Division 4 all-state honorable mention.
