Two staff members at Green Hill School, a juvenile detention center in Chehalis, were transported to the emergency room via ambulance Tuesday after they were exposed to “an unknown smoke and a strange smell” in a residential unit, facility management confirmed Wednesday.

Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the facility at about noon on Tuesday, July 9, due to breathing concerns, according to Lewis County 911 Communications call logs.

Radio scanner traffic at the time indicated three people had been exposed, though only two required medical transport.

“We have not found evidence of illicit substances at this time. As a precaution, we purged the unit’s air system. None of our young people required medical attention,” said a spokesperson for the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, which manages Green Hill School.

    The incident is under investigation.
