Updated: Boy, 15, accused of trying to throw football full of contraband over Green Hill School's fence

A suspect is in custody after police and Green Hill School staff intercepted a football full of contraband that someone tried to throw over the Chehalis juvenile detention facility’s fence on Tuesday.

Green Hill staff reported that a male subject had “attempted to throw an item over the fence and then began walking away,” according to a news release from the Chehalis Police Department.

Chehalis officers were able to locate a male nearby who matched the description of the suspect, and noted the football the suspect was carrying “appeared to be altered.”

Inside the football, officers located approximately nine suspected marijuana vape pens, approximately 6 pounds of suspected marijuana, approximately 1.5 pounds of marijuana “dabs” and two packages of tobacco, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

The suspect, a 15-year-old Spanaway boy, has been booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center for possession of a controlled substance and attempting to introduce contraband.

“Due to the age of the suspect, his name is not being released,” the Chehalis Police Department said in a news release, adding, “This case is still under investigation and no further details are being released at this time.”

The Chehalis Police Department stated Tuesday it “will continue to aggressively seek out those who are intent on bringing contraband into Green Hill School.”

The state Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), which manages Green Hill, thanked staff and law enforcement for their efforts in a statement on Tuesday.

“Thanks to the quick action by DCYF staff who observed a person on the other side of the Green Hill School fence and alerted authorities, Chehalis police were able to quickly arrive on the scene and apprehend someone who was found with contraband,” DCYF stated. “Intercepting contraband from getting onto our facilities is something DCYF staff are doing regularly with the support of our law enforcement partners, which keeps young people, staff and the community safe.”
