School planting progress continues at Tama-Toledo Christian School
TAMA – For anyone taking a stroll through the 600 block of Tama’s Oswego Street this summer, renovations on the old Catholic church by the nonprofit Tama-Toledo Christian School may appear to have stalled as of late but according to Rep. Dean Fisher, president of the school’s board of directors, a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and will soon ramp up in ways more visible to the public.
Elberon Women’s Club selects yard winner
ELBERON — The Elberon Area Women’s Club met at 11 a.m. on July 15. The group drove around Elberon looking at the yards of residents to pick a winner of the “prettiest yard” contest. They voted to choose the yard of Scott and Heidi Pippert. A check for two meals at a Elberon Fire and Rescue Fish Fry will be sent to them. A sign was placed on the lawn acknowledging them as winners.
Massive Park Fire Rages in Northern California, Prompting Mandatory Evacuations
A rapidly spreading fire, dubbed the Park Fire, has burned at least 45,000 acres in northern California, just north of Chico. As of now, the blaze is only 3% contained. Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for communities in Butte County and neighboring Tama County. Evacuation centers and animal shelters have been set up for affected residents. This fire is ravaging the same area devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire, which claimed 85 lives. In related news, the Riverside County Fire Department is battling a two-alarm fire at a strip mall in Indio, with multiple crews on the scene.
Toledo council wraps up a speedy meeting quickly
TOLEDO – This week’s Toledo City Council meeting seemed to break all land speed records, as it was started and finished in less than half an hour. This blink and you miss it meeting started with a resolution to amend the city personnel handbook with some new policies.
Elberon Auxiliary holds July meeting
ELBERON – The Elberon American Legion Auxiliary Unit 226 met July 11 with the meeting opening in usual form. Secretary Norma Riha called the roll of officers and read the minutes of the June meeting. Treasurer Pat Sauer gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read. Old...
Another blue-ribbon year in the books for the Tama County Fair!
GLADBROOK – The Tama County Livestock and Fair Association hosted the 2024 Tama County Fair at the fairgrounds in Gladbrook beginning Monday, July 15, through Sunday, July 21. It was another stellar fair week for both 4-Hers and FFA members alike marred by perhaps only the Monday evening weather which included strong storms and wind.

Eight Poweshiek County 4-H and FFA Grand Champion winners will participate in the 2024 Best of the Best on Saturday, July 27 at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Marengo. GMG bond referendum informational meetings set for July 30, Aug. 8 in Garwin
GARWIN – The Green Mountain-Garwin Community School District will host two community informational meetings as part of a possible November 2024 school bond referendum. The first meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 30, at the GMG Secondary building in the upper gym in Garwin, while the second meeting is set for Thursday, August 8, in the lower gym. Both sessions will begin at 7 p.m.
