Cherokee County residents will soon have more opportunities to give input on a transportation safety plan that’s in development.
Cherokee County, along with the cities of Ball Ground, Canton, Holly Springs and Woodstock, are working on the development of a Safety Action Plan.
Between 2018 and 2022, there were 87 fatalities and 436 serious injuries on roadways in Cherokee County, according to traffic data from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The Safety Action Plan, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, focuses on contributing factors of traffic crashes with a goal of eliminating traffic fatalities.
Cherokee County is working with Pond and Company to gather data and develop a plan under the guidelines and requirements of the grant program.
The county is hosting a booth at Woodstock’s Family Fun Night from 5 to 9 p.m. July 18 at the Woodstock Arts Event Green, where residents can learn more about the Safe Streets for All plan.
County representatives will also be at Canton’s First Friday event from from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 at Cannon Park in downtown Canton.
Community members can learn about the planning effort and provide input at two public meetings in August. A survey remains open on the project website until Aug. 30.
An in-person option and virtual option are being offered to accommodate as much participation as possible. Both meetings will cover the same content.
The in-person drop-in meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in Victory Hall at the L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens Recreation Center, 7345 Cumming Highway in Canton. A virtual option will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 14 via Zoom.
