Cherokee County sheriff's office awarded grant for body camera program
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) - Earlier this month, Justice & Security Strategies (JSS) announced that the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a $90,000 grant to support their body-worn camera program.
Weir Man Jailed on Sex Crime Charges
A Cherokee County man is arrested for sex crimes. Just before 8:00pm Tuesday, Cherokee County deputies were dispatched to a Weir residence. As a result of their investigation, 60-year-old Francisco Torres, of Weir, was taken into custody near the scene. Torres is suspected of approaching a senior while she was outside her home gardening and attempting to sexually assault her.
West Mineral Man Jailed On Weapons Charge
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a rural northern Cherokee County home Monday afternoon, between Scammon and West Mineral. The search warrant was part of an investigation into a shooting incident, where the suspect is alleged to have shot a nearby home, where several children were present.
Firefighters Injured in Galena House Fire
A house fire in Galena leaves a home in shambles and injures four firefighters. Cherokee County 911 was alerted to a house fire on East 2nd Street Wednesday. The call came in around 12:30pm. The structure was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived on scene, with the blaze burning with such intensity that the entire roof was destroyed. Due to that and the 90 degree heat, it took firefighters nearly three hours to control the blaze. Fire crews from Galena Fire, Baxter, Columbus, Carl Junction, and Quapaw responded along with Cherokee County EMS.
