70 homes in Cherokee destroyed by flooding
State officials estimate 2000 homes were damaged or destroyed during recent flooding in northwest Iowa. After previous flooding in Cherokee, FEMA bought out 40 properties. Another 70 homes in Cherokee were destroyed in this year’s flooding and Cherokee Mayor Craig Schmidt said he doesn’t know where people will go.
Woodbury and Cherokee counties await federal aid for flood recovery
So far, a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Iowa flooding includes five counties: Clay, Emmet, Lyon, Plymouth, and Sioux. Additional counties are expected to be added in the coming weeks, as officials in Woodbury and Cherokee counties are working to make sure they don't get left out.
Street Closings Set During Storm Lake Sewer Work
The City of Storm Lake will be completing critical work to the sanitary sewer infrastructure in Scout Park and the sewer piping downstream. According to a news release from the city, a temporary piping system needs to be installed to ensure continued sewer service. While the system is in place, small areas of several roads will be closed to allow the pipe to cross including Grand Avenue, College Avenue, Otsego Street, and the intersection of Ontario Street and 3rd Street. Ramps across the piping will allow pedestrian traffic to cross at the seven closure points.

National Guard Assisting with Flood Cleanup
(story provided by Radio Iowa) Members of the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Refueling Wing and the 132nd Wing have sent equipment and manpower to areas needing help with the removal of flood debris. Iowa Guard spokesperson, Jackie Schmillen (Smill-en), says the Sioux City based 185th is helping in Woodbury, Cherokee, Ida and Buena Vista Counties. While the 132nd based in Des Moines is in the Iowa Great Lakes region.
