WILSON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — “There’s no crying in baseball,” is one of the most well-known quotes in film history.

Unfortunately, adults are being told there’s no fighting allowed on the field either, after a coach and an umpire exchanged blows at a high-stakes little league game.

Media partners WNCN first reported that an assistant baseball coach with the Cherryville Little League has been suspended, along with an umpire, after the two allegedly fought on Monday in Wilson in front of teams of 10-12-year-olds.

Reports state that the Wilson City Little League was hosting the North Carolina State Little League Tournament, and Cherryville was up against Bull City out of Durham.

In the top of the fifth inning, we’re told, a Cherryville coach walked up to home plate and exchanged some words with the umpire.

Video of the incident reportedly shows the ump try to walk away before he was shoved. He then turned around and began to not only fight with the coach, but appeared to hit him repeatedly with his facemask.

“It wasn’t a one-off event that led to it, but it was something that had kind of been building throughout the game between their coach and the umpire,” Bull City President Aaron Schoonmaker said.

Both parties were eventually subdued, and removed, as the game was suspended.

Queen City News reached out to Cherryville Little League through its social media page on Wednesday, but have not heard back.

Bull City won the game 15-6, and Cherryville was eliminated.
