    Capybaras are legal in Virginia

My granddaughter showed me a stuffed animal she received for her birthday and told me it was a Capybara, which I had never heard of. This animal is native to South America and is the largest living rodent.

You can legally own one in many US states, including Virginia. It is illegal to have a capbara as a pet in Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, and Massachusetts.

Be informed before you decide to own a capybara

This rodent can grow up to four feet long, two inches tall, and weigh up to 146 pounds. Capabara Tips says you should check with your local Virginia government for specific rules regarding the ownership of this and other exotic pets.

In their native habitats, Capybaras live in savannas and dense forests near bodies of water. This rodent is generally sociable, but if you decide to own one as a pet, it needs ample space and an area to swim.
