    Missing Virginians have different outcomes

Virginians go missing all the time, and there are varied outcomes. Some come home on their own, while others are located by authorities and returned to their loved ones. Some are never located while others are found deceased, which was the fate of an Amherst County woman missing for more than one year.

News 13 reported in May that Elsie Mae Wiggington of Amherst County had gone missing in June 2023. Her family said she disappeared from the home she shared with her ex-husband after saying she feared for her life.

Wigginton was the Director of Nursing at Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center, and friends said she loved her job, her children, and her grandchildren and would not have walked away.

Wiggington's ex-husband has been charged with her murder

WDBJ7 reports that the Amherst County Sheriff's Department has found the missing woman's remains and made an arrest in the case. Elsie Wiggington's remains were found at 673 Pendleton Drive, the home she shared with her ex-husband, Frederick Lewis Wiggington Jr.

He remains in custody, without bond, in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail. He has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm while committing a felony. The family has held out hope for over a year, saying they just wanted to know what happened and have closure. This was not the expected outcome, but now they have answers.
