CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Troopers made two DUI arrest after they were nearly hit while arresting a man that lead them on a pursuit.

It happened Sunday, July 21 around 1:20 a.m., when Troopers attempted to stop a Nissan Altima that was speeding on I-64 in Chesapeake.

Troopers began to pursue the Altima after the driver refused to stop. The Altima sped onto the Military Highway exit and took off on Cavalier Boulevard and then Victory Boulevard.

According to state police, the driver failed to stop for a red light at Victory Boulevard and Greenwood Drive and crashed into a Chevrolet Equinox. The driver of the Equinox was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

The driver of the Altima, Phillip Gassaway, II, 47, of Portsmouth, Va., was arrested and charged with failure to maintain control, failure to carry identification, reckless driving, eluding law enforcement, driving on a suspended license and aggressive driving.  State Police said Gassaway was also wanted for a 2019 parole violation.

While investigating the traffic crash, a Dodge Ram came through the traffic crash scene. The driver of the Dodge, Christian Edmonds, 35, of Glen Allen, Va., was uncooperative, and an investigation led to Edmonds being arrested for DUI.

As Edmonds was being taken into custody, a BMW drove through the same crash scene and nearly hit a State Trooper and Edmonds.

The driver of the BMW, Keshayla M. Griffin, 29, of Chesapeake, Va., was stopped at the scene and arrested for DUI.
