"Jaws" isn't the only reason to avoid swimming on July 4 at beaches and other swimming areas throughout Massachusetts. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation posts twice-daily water quality test results for beaches and ponds under its purview at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the Mass.gov website. As of Wednesday, July 3, 30 such areas were closed to swimming, with most due to high bacteria levels and an occasional cyanobacteria bloom popping up here and there.

Massachusetts House passes home equity legislation
Malden delegation voted to protect property owners from “equity theft”. On June 26, 2024, the Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously passed H.4791, An Act relative to municipal tax lien procedures and protections for property owners in the Commonwealth. This bill seeks to align current Massachusetts statute with a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court while addressing the issue of delinquent tax collections – or so-called “equity theft.” The legislation secures the rights of property owners to reclaim any excess equity to which they are entitled after all taxes and fees are repaid to the municipalities following a tax foreclosure, while substantially increasing notifications and other protections for property owners throughout the foreclosure process. On June 27, the Massachusetts Senate referred the bill to its committee on Ways and Means.
Convicted murderer sentenced on contraband charge in Columbia County
A man who's serving 20 years to life for second-degree murder out of Dutchess County was sentenced on Wednesday for having contraband in the Hudson Correctional Facility. Jose Dugger, 44, pleaded guilty to knowingly making/possessing dangerous prison contraband in May.

Judge suggests Trump felony sentencing may no longer be "necessary" after SCOTUS immunity ruling
In wake of the Supreme Court's ruling that presidents are granted total immunity for "official acts," a path has opened for Donald Trump to avoid sentencing for his conviction on falsifying business records to hide an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels. According to The New Republic, Juan Merchan, the judge who presided over the hush-money trial that landed Trump with 34 felony convictions, is no longer certain that sentencing, which was delayed to September, will ever happen.
Mass. State Lottery: winning $100,000 300X scratch ticket sold in Attleboro
A winning “300X” Massachusetts State Lottery ticket worth $100,000 was sold at a lottery and smoke shop on the Rhode Island border on Tuesday. The $30 scratch ticket was purchased at Lucky 95 Lottery and Smoke Shop on Washington Street in Attleboro. The shop is located on Route 1 less than a fifth of a mile north of the Rhode Island border, opposite Pawtucket and blocks away from I-95.
After years of renting, Troy receives RFPs for a new city hall
Eight proposals have been received for a new city hall in Troy. Mayor Carmella Mantello says her administration is working to evaluate and narrow the proposals down to two or three options before negotiations begin. The Republican says the Request for Proposals, which hasn’t been shared with the public, has led to new ideas on a potential location. Mantello says a new, more thoughtfully laid out city hall would make it easier for residents to utilize services.

A new electric bike charging station is now open in Amsterdam. The new bike stand charges the five CDPHP Cycle! e-bikes it holds wirelessly. It was celebrated at a ceremony at the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook in Amsterdam Monday.
