MOST AREA SCHOOLS FALL BELOW STATE AVERAGE FOR ILEARN PROFICIENCY
(Whitewater Valley)--ILEARN results were released Wednesday by the Indiana’s Department of Education. Here’s how some of the area schools outside of Richmond fared. The statewide average of third through eighth graders who tested proficient in both math and English was 31%. Only a handful of area school corporations met or exceeded that mark. Union County, Randolph Southern, and Monroe Central were all slightly above the 31% mark. Northeastern and Centerville barely missed that mark at 30%. All other area schools were between 20 and 30% proficiency with the exception of Randolph Eastern which was, by far, the lowest-performing school at ten percent proficiency.
Dog club offering fall classes
GREENVILLE — The Greenville Area Dog Club is gearing up for fall with a variety of classes starting on Sept. 3. Registration opens on July 22 and ends on Aug. 19. Whether you have a puppy, senior puppy, or a seasoned pooch, there’s a class for everyone. They offer puppy, senior puppy, beginner obedience, rally, trick, and agility. They also offer canine good citizen testing for dogs and owners who have completed obedience classes in the past.
Garber graduates U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
ARCANUM — Logan Michael Garber, son of Aaron & Dorothy Garber, of Arcanum recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Garber earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U. S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. Garber is a graduate of Franklin Monroe High School.

Wayne HC active shooter training
GREENVILLE — Wayne HealthCare, in collaboration with the Greenville Police Department, Greenville Township Emergency Services, Greenville Fire Department, and the Darke County Sheriff Department will be conducting an active shooter drill on Wednesday, July 31. The drill will begin at approximately 8 a.m. and is expected to last for three to four hours.

Fair gazebo gets makeover
GREENVILLE – The Great Darke County Fair gazebo at the entrance to the grounds got a facelift with head groundskeeper Rex Weyrick and fair caretakers putting in the work. “Our head caretaker, Rex Weyrick, took on the gazebo and spruced it up,” said fair secretary Laura Ahrens. “Rex and his crew did a nice paint job, cleaned out the mulch, and put some river rock around the bed. It gave it a nice look, and we hope everybody enjoys it.”

MOTORCYCLES TO ARRIVE IN RICHMOND TUESDAY TO HONOR SEARA BURTON
(Richmond, IN)--A large group of motorcycle riders will be coming into Richmond Tuesday afternoon and stopping at the Richmond Police Department for a couple of hours. It’s part of an event call the Beyond the Call of Duty Celebration. Greenville Police Department – Police Reports
On June 29, 2024, at 11:25 PM police was dispatched to 403 1/2 North Gray Avenue in reference to a theft of a motor vehicle. PO met with the victim, known tohim as Keith Mitchell at the rear of the residence. Keith advised his vehicle, a black 1997 Honda Civic was parked in the yard; behind his apartment. The last time Keith knew the car was parked there was approximately 9PM on this date. Keith went to sleep on his couch and was awoken by Todd Garner in his residence. Keith knew Todd but had not given him permission to come into his residence. Keith had the door locked to his apartment but advised it was very easy to open when locked. Todd does stop by Keith’s residence regularly but in this instance, he had gotten through a locked door and had not been invited to come into his apartment. Keith has a camera facing his entry door; it failed to pick up Todd entering Keith’s residence. Todd talked to Keith briefly, but Keith asked him to leave. Todd left the apartment and Keith went back to sleep. When Keith woke up, he noticed the keys to his Honda were missing from his end table. Keith soon found his Honda was also stolen. Todd was the only other subject in Keith’s apartment and had access to his keys. According to Keith, Todd has never been in Keith’s Honda. Keith showed PO recent pry marks on his entry door. Photos were taken of the pry marks and the area where the keys were stolen from. The photos were added to the case file. The Honda was entered into LEADS/NCIC as stolen. Keith filled out a victim’s rights waiver form and statement in regard to this incident. At 1:07 AM hours the listed Honda was located in Randolph County. An unknown suspect, believed to be Todd Garner, was seen exiting the vehicle with a K-9 and running into a field. The suspect could not be located. The vehicle was removed from LEADS/NCIC. The vehicle was towed back to the Hart Avenue Impound Garage by Johnson Towing, where it was stored until it can be processed. Keith was notified his vehicle was recovered and waiting to be processed.
