List: Fourth of July events in the region
There are several local cities and townships hosting parades and festivals this week in honor of Independence Day. Here are some of those events:. Oxford Parks & Recreation Freedom Festival: Salute to Freedom Parade at 6:30 p.m. July 2 starting on the corner of College Avenue and High Street in Oxford and continuing down High Street to Poplar Street. Enjoy Oxford hosts a concert at Uptown Park featuring the Bluewater Kings Bang at 7 p.m. On July 3, events at Oxford Community Park start at 5 p.m. with booths, music, food, gladiator jousts, inflatables, games, face painting and more. Arcanum students lend a hand
ARCANUM – Arcanum-Butler Schools is getting a good summer cleaning with the help of some of its students. “They are working in the restrooms, classrooms, hallways, teacher lounge, and cafeteria, cleaning all kinds of things and doing odds and ends jobs trying to help keep our school clean and nice,” said Arcanum High School Principal Ty Cates. “We have such a beautiful facility, and it is nice that the students come back and help before some of them head off to college and make some extra money in the summer.”

Kurt Troutwine – A job well done
It’s a Job Well Done for Arcanum Fire Chief Kurt Troutwine after serving 36 years of service to the Village of Arcanum in the local Fire Department. Kurt began his service to the fire department in 1988 and became the village’s Fire Chief in 2008. He also served as a member of Greenville Rescue from 1976 to 1988. A retirement ceremony was held at Greenville Grace Brethren Church on June 30, 2024. Thank you for your service and best wishes in your retirement! An AHS Class of 1973 graduate, Kurt is the father of two children and has six grandchildren. He and his wife Linda make their home in the Village of Arcanum.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. – Boater Jamie Cunnagin of New Lebanon, Ohio, caught a five-bass limit weighing 12 pounds, 2 ounces, Saturday to win the Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) Presented by T-H Marine on the Ohio River at Tanners Creek. The tournament was the third event of the season for the BFL Buckeye Division. Cunnagin earned $5,082 for his victory.
PFLUM FAMILY URGES WOULD-BE SEARCHERS TO STAY OFF JOHNSON PROPERTY
(Connersville, IN)--The family of Denise Pflum released a statement over the weekend after a Fayette County judge last week stopped their efforts to force the search of the property of Erika Johnson for Denise’s remains. The message indicates the Pflums will try another approach and urges the community to be patient until that happens. They are discouraging the efforts of some to organize a protest, saying that it will not sway the court’s position. They’re also asking that people not venture onto the Johnson property themselves in an effort to search. They say they have a team of search professionals waiting in the wings if and when a search is ever permitted.

Jim was born May 10, 1930, in Wise County, Virginia, to the late Loy Samuel & Janie (Salyers) Castle. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn (Midlam) Castle; brothers, Willard and Curtis Castle; and sister, Nina Collett.
Celebrate summer at DCCA’s Barbecue and Blues
Darke County Center for the Arts is once again bringing its annual summer special event “Barbecue and Blues” to downtown Greenville on Friday, July 12; the fun begins at 6 p.m. on the spacious lawn at the Greenville Public Library, 520 Sycamore Street. Cincinnati-based Alex Poteet, who has been providing world-class live music since 2006, will open the show for headliners Brass Tracks Band, which features a world-class lineup of veteran musicians dedicated to honoring the music of the top horn bands from the 60’s to the present day. Delicious food offerings as well as soft drinks, wine and micro brews will be available throughout the evening. Vendors include food truck favorites Badges BBQ, Cray Cray Cajun, and Fren-cheese Eats. “’Barbecue and Blues” has always been a fantastic summer party, with dancing spontaneously breaking out across the lawn,” commented DCCA Executive Director Andrea Jordan; Ms. Jordan urges music lovers of all ages to “grab blankets or lawn chairs and come out to celebrate summer with us.”

Sue Ann (Lipp) Wheeler, 90, a longtime Centerville, Ind. resident, died June 30, 2024 at University Place, West Lafayette, Ind. She was born June 13, 1934 in Frankfort to the late Thomas S. & Helen L. (Curtis) Lipp. She married Dale E. Wheeler on July 20, 1952 in Frankfort at the First Methodist Church and he preceded her in death on September 27, 1989.

Driver airlifted after her car was pinned under a trailer in a crash at US127-intersection
On July 1, 2024 at approximately 9:52 a.m. Darke County Deputies along with Greenville Township Fire and Rescue, Greenville City Fire, CareFlight, and assistance from Ohio State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement and Greenville Police Department, responded to the intersection of US Route127 and Childrens Home-Bradford Road for an injury crash involving a semi tractor-trailer and a vehicle.
