Investigators ask for public help after Preble County fire ruled arson; $5K reward offered
Fire investigators are asking for public help after ruling that a West Elkton fire was caused by arson, with a possible $5,000 reward. In a release, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of State Fire Marshal said that at 12:19 a.m. on Friday, the Shawnee Fire District responded to a fire in a vacant single-family house at 7369 Greenbush Road. Fire crews found the house to be fully engulfed in flames, but nobody was hurt in the fire.
Five cheerleaders attend UCA Camp
Five Connersville Lady Spartan cheerleaders earned All-American status at the 2024 Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp at IU Bloomington last week. Olivia Becker, Lexi Gibson, Christian Laboyteaux, and Jocelyn Turney earned All-American status for the varsity team with Bella Mitchell being named JV All-American. The CHS varsity team took first-place in the Cheer Division, second in Stunt Sequence and in camp routine/pyramid and earned a specialty trophy for Best Transition. The JV Lady Spartans placed first for their camp routine/pyramid, and camp dance.
Greenville’s stadium, outdoor athletic facility update
After two months of working with insurance carriers and adjusters as well as electrical, structural, and astroturf engineers related to our recent tornado damages to our stadium, tennis courts, surrounding outdoor athletic fencing, and two dugouts, we are now expecting a settlement determination and the beginning of processing the allowable funding checks from the insurance adjuster to begin the repairs this week.

OUTAGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AFFECT WHITEWATER VALLEY
There is developing overnight national and international news that is affecting us here in the Whitewater Valley. There have been IT outages across the country that are affecting airports, banks, and some 911 services. It appears to be connected to Microsoft. At 4:30 this morning, Union County dispatchers indicated that both their 911 and non-emergency lines are down. Butler County is reporting similar 911 outages. There have also been reports of bank cards not working. There are also major affects at airports across the country, including at our two closest. Major air carriers have asked the FAA for a global ground stop on all flights. Our two closest airports air having issues. In Dayton, some flight statuses are now listed as either unknown or delayed. At Cincinnati, outbound travelers are not able to check in for their flights. National security officials are saying all of the issues are not the result of a cyber attack, but are pointing the finger at a computer glitch by the firm Crowdstrike.

Mild for July, cooler pattern underway and 90° heat may be on hold rest of the month
Thursday opened and closed very mild. This was the coolest July afternoon in three years. A new pattern has emerged with heat and humidity likely to be on hold for several days. Temperatures early Thursday morning slipped well below 60° in many outlying locations and will likely go even cooler Friday morning. It was refreshing but you could make a case that it was a to chilly with a low of 51° in New Castle.

MAN SENTENCED FOR SETTING FIRE TO CONNERSVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER'S HOUSE
(Connersville, IN)--Almost three years ago, Tommy Harrison drove from Alabama to set fire to his father’s home, Tommy Williams, who was also a member of Connersville City Council. Harrison also spray-painted a slur on the house to make it look like a racial incident. The family’s pets died in the fire. Now, Harrison has been sentenced. Harrison will spend just shy of five years in a federal prison. Court documents indicated that Harrison contacted Williams just before leaving Alabama, stopped in Kentucky to buy spray paint, and contacted Williams again about an hour after the fire was set.
