State workers set to leave downtown St. Louis for new facilities in Chesterfield

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The state of Missouri could be vacating the center of the St. Louis-metropolitan area.

Employees of at least a dozen state departments are set to pack up to head to new digs in Chesterfield, Missouri.

That's after a unanimous vote by the Missouri Board of Public Buildings, which includes votes from Missouri Gov. Mike Parson(R), Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe (R), Attorney General Andrew Bailey (R), and others.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports reasons given were financial, not safety.

As part of the move, the state will sell two buildings. One of the buildings the state will sell is the historic Wainwright State Office Building, which opened in 1892, considered an early skyscraper, designed by Louis Sullivan.

Also for sale is the Mill Creek Building on Jefferson, which reportedly already has a buyer lined up.
