(670 The Score) Chicago is in for a tough baseball season for its two teams, according to one prominent projection system.

Baseball Prospectus’ newly released PECOTA projections forecast the Cubs just below the .500 mark with 80.2 wins, while it sees the White Sox as one of the worst teams in baseball at 65.5 wins.

The Cubs’ projection comes toward the end of an underwhelming offseason in which they've taken a step back on paper as star outfielder Cody Bellinger remains unsigned. Following an 83-79 campaign in 2023, the Cubs have made just three notable acquisitions this offseason in signing left-hander Shota Imanaga and reliever Hector Neris while also adding infielder Michael Busch, a prized prospect, in a trade with the Dodgers.

Of course, the Cubs can swing the projections more their favor by signing Bellinger, who hit .307 with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs in 2023. The Cubs remain the favorite to land him.

The White Sox are undergoing another rebuilding process as new general manager Chris Getz has begun overhauling the roster he inherited. While 65.5 wins would be progress from a 61-101 season in 2023, the White Sox could still deal ace Dylan Cease this offseason.

PECOTA projects the Dodgers for an MLB-leading 101.1 wins while the Braves check in just behind them at 100.7 wins. In the American League, the Astros are projected to lead the way with 95 victories.

The Cubs open their regular season on March 28, when they visit the defending World Series champion Rangers in Texas. The White Sox host the Tigers on Opening Day on March 28 at Guaranteed Rate Field.
