(670 The Score) With Opening Day in MLB looming next Thursday, left-hander Jordan Montgomery remains in a free agent.

Where he’ll land remains a mystery, but if Laurence Holmes and Leila Rahimi had their way, they Cubs would sign him, as they believe the 31-year-old Montgomery is a quality fit. Montgomery had a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts split between the Cardinals and Rangers last season, and he impressed in helping lead Texas to a World Series title. He has a 3.68 ERA in seven MLB seasons.

Montgomery is a client of powerful agent Scott Boras, whose players have signed for less than expected this offseason. That included outfielder Cody Bellinger returning to the Cubs on a three-year, $80-million deal.

“The Cubs didn’t go crazy with their spending this offseason,” Holmes said.

“If you believe your division is down and you’re just trying to buy yourself into the playoffs, wouldn’t it be worth it?

“Get in and let Captain Variance show up.”
