(670 The Score) Seeking to fill their void at third base, the Cubs have turned to slugger Christopher Morel as their starter at the hot corner. It has come with mixed results early in the season.
Morel has two errors in three starts at third base after recording five errors during spring training. The Cubs have put their faith behind the 24-year-old Morel, as Gold Glove second baseman Nico Hoerner discussed on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Tuesday afternoon.
Hoerner understands the difficulty for Morel in taking on his new role and believes in him moving forward.
“Making defensive miscues is the most challenging thing to deal with in baseball,” Hoerner said. “You strike out in a big situation, obviously it hurts the team, but it’s ultimately you’re handling it yourself. But like when you make defensive miscues over there, whether it’s the error or the misplay that we’ve all done, the way that it impacts the pitcher or an inning, those things feel heavy. Those are definitely things that can carry into other parts of the game.
“Obviously, he’s putting in great work. I believe in him a lot. A lot of that is because of his personality. He cares a ton, prepares well and brings energy for other people too, and it all comes from such a great place. Like, the excitement and showmanship you see on the field, it’s very genuine. It’s not like pre-planned. He’s not like doing stuff to be cool. He’s just doing it.”
Weather permitting, the Cubs will host the Rockies on Tuesday evening in the second game of their three-game set at Wrigley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on 670 The Score. Pregame starts at 6:05 p.m. You can listen here .
