(670 The Score) In checking the necessary boxes to select quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Bears put their faith in several new hires to their offensive coaching staff.

That included new passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, who has stepped into a key role on head coach Matt Eberflus’ staff. Brown was part of a coaching staff with the Panthers last season that struggled to develop then-rookie quarterback Bryce Young, the top overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Brown wasn’t willing to compare the situations in Chicago and Carolina, but he pointed to why Williams can be successful in leading the Bears.

“It starts with the film, first and foremost,” Brown said. “He would have been a hot commodity the previous year as well. Being able to see how those skills translate to the next level but also if there are any weak points to what we’re trying to build here with the Bears. I would just say his overall approach, he never got rattled. Always had an even-keeled demeanor walking in every single room. He’s super confident but, at the same time, humble and eager to learn. That’s probably my favorite part about him.”

In a statement that was more symbolic than it was newsworthy, Eberflus announced prior to the start of rookie minicamp last Friday that Williams would immediately be the Bears’ starting quarterback. That means that Williams will be the one leading the team through OTAs, veteran minicamp and training camp while receiving valuable reps along the way.

That's all part of the Bears’ plan for Williams' development track as a rookie. For now, they're keeping the goal fairly simple.

“It’s just steadily improving,” Brown said. “Not getting too far ahead. We’re not going to be able to play a game tomorrow. Takes the small steps from the overall operation to getting in the huddle, calling the play the right way, the different shifts and motions, mastering the cadence. It’s just one day at a time.”
