Cubs Announce Probable Pitchers for Atlanta Series

The Chicago Cubs are coming off back-to-back series losses. After dropping two of three against the Atlanta Braves a week ago, the Cubs dropped three of four to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field over the weekend. Following Monday's off day, the Cubs will look to get back on track with a three-game set against the same pesky Braves on Tuesday.

Courtesy of the off day, the Cubs have the ability to switch up their rotation if they so desire. For two of the three games, it appears the Cubs will keep things in line. However, Thursday's starter very much remains in flux.

According to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network, RHP Javier Assad will pitch on Tuesday and LHP Justin Steele will take the bump on Wednesday. Both pitchers were due up in the rotation entering this series. However, Thursday's game is still listed as to be determined, meaning RHP Kyle Hendricks could get bumped from the start if LHP Jordan Wicks comes back from injury for Thursday's game.

Wicks can return from the injured list for Thursday's game, serving as a likely possibility given Hendricks' recent struggles. The veteran righty was beat up on Friday by the Pirates, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits. Hendricks' start in Pittsburgh over a week ago was his lone quality outing of the season.

Thursday's question regarding who's starting will likely not be answered until after Wednesday night's game. The Cubs desperately need a series win, and having two of their best pitchers on the bump will certainly help that. One slight wrinkle to consider is that LHP Shota Imanaga will be on his usual rest schedule for Thursday's game, meaning he is also an option for Craig Counsell unless they opt to give him extra rest.

The Cubs and Braves begin their three-game series on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. The 6:40 p.m. CDT first pitch will feature Assad and Charlie Morton for their respective sides.
