The Chicago Cubs welcomed back a defensive staple Tuesday as Dansby Swanson was activated from the 10-day injured list. The team also promoted Luis Vazquez's promotion and demoted Pete Crow-Armstrong and Miles Mastrobuoni to Triple-A Iowa in corresponding moves.

    Dansby Swanson Returns

Swanson has been out of action since May 7 due to a right knee sprain . Leading up to the injury, it was apparent that something wasn't right with the shortstop. His production at the plate and in the field wasn't up to his usual standards, and the Cubs felt the effects.

With the All-Star back in the fold, the team receives a big boost to the middle infield. Swanson's return to the roster comes just in time to face his former team, the Atlanta Braves.

Pete Crow-Armstrong's demotion is a bit puzzling as the young outfielder showed improvement in his second stint with the big-league club. With a trip back to Triple-A Iowa, Crow-Armstrong will look to continue his development.

Conversely, demoting Miles Mastrobuoni is a much more plausible move. The 28-year-old infielder wasn't producing enough to warrant a spot on the roster. His -0.1 bWAR only hurt a team trying to compete for a playoff spot.

If Luis Vazquez can contribute, one has to think that Mastrobuoni's days are numbered. With Nico Hoerner's status in limbo, the team will look to Vazquez and Nick Madrigal to contribute.

Whatever the Cubs decide to do, they should keep one eye on their future by giving Vazquez ample reps at second base. He was contributing enough for Triple-A Iowa to warrant a look at the big-league level.

Dansby Swanson's return should provide a big boost. The question now shifts over to second base, where the Cubs need someone to step up. The Cubs need answers as they look to stay afloat in the NL Central.

Their next test comes Tuesday as the Braves visit Wrigley Field to open a three-game series. First pitch is at 6:40 PM CT and the game will air on Marquee Sports Network.
