Ian Happ on Cubs' woes: 'This team is too good to be playing the brand of baseball we’ve been playing'

(670 The Score) As the weather has heated up, the Cubs’ bats have gone cold.

The Cubs have lost five straight games and 10 of their last 13 contests in large part due to a scuffling offense, which has hit .188 and averaged 2.5 runs per game since May 13. It’s the reversal of a trend early in the season, when the Cubs boasted one of the best offenses in baseball.

Amid the woes, Cubs left fielder Ian Happ believes a breakthrough is coming, as he explained on the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Tuesday.

“We have a lot of really good hitters on this team,” Happ said. “You’re going to see some really productive offense. You’re not seeing it right now. But it is coming. This team is too good to be playing the brand of baseball we’ve been playing the last couple of weeks. It’s not going to last.”

For his part, Happ believes he's on the verge of overcoming his own personal struggles. After being in a slump, Happ homered twice in the Cubs' 4-3 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday at Busch Stadium. Happ is hitting .220 with four homers, 17 RBIs and a .686 OPS in 49 games this season.

The Cubs managed just five hits in a 5-1 loss to the Brewers on Monday at American Family Field in the opener of a four-game set with their NL Central-leading rivals in Milwaukee.

The Cubs and Brewers square off again Tuesday, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on 670 The Score or by downloading the Audacy app and searching for 670 The Score.
