The Chicago Cubs are coming off an electric, late-night win at Wrigley Field. With short rest, they’ll run it back for an early start on Sunday.

Prior to the game, David Bote was recalled from Triple-A, returning to the majors for the first time since 2022. As a result, Nick Madrigal was demoted.

In addition to Bote’s call up, a few other moves and updates were outlined prior to Sunday's game. In order to make space for Bote on the 40-man roster, Adbert Alzolay was transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL. Alzolay is in a shutdown phase of his recovery, and this move signals a long absence for the reliever.

In addition, there are some updates on other rehabbing arms. Per Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network, Jordan Wicks is making another start in Iowa. In addition, both Keegan Thompson and Daniel Palencia are expected to throw on Sunday.

Although Thompson and Palencia have had their fair amount of struggles in the majors, the best ability right now for the bullpen is availability. With Alzolay, Julian Merryweather, and Yency Almonte out through at least June , the other arms in the organization will be relied on. Palencia’s high velocity and Thompson’s multi-inning ability serve as quality depth for the front office to consider moving forward.

With all three players throwing, it’s likely that one, two, or all three could be returning from the IL soon. Sunday marks Wicks’ third rehab start. Although his usage has been limited, he could return and find a role in the bullpen if the Cubs see fit.

The Cubs and Cincinnati Reds finish up their three-game set at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Ben Brown will challenge Nick Lodolo in the rubber match.
