Jed Hoyer is maintaining faith that Cubs' offense will turn it around

(670 The Score) Despite the Cubs’ offensive woes lasting for weeks, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is maintaining faith that his club can find its best form at the plate.

Hoyer expressed that belief Tuesday afternoon, prior to his Cubs rallying for a 7-6 win against the lowly White Sox in the evening at Wrigley Field. The Cubs offense has picked up its production in the past week, which has been a welcome sight for a team that ranks 14th in MLB in runs per game (4.3), 21st in OPS (.681) and 22nd in slugging percentage (.370).

“We were sixth in baseball for runs scored last season,” Hoyer said. “This group is a better offensive club than what we have shown. In the first month until the series in Boston (in late April), I think we hit well. Since then we have just had a power and scoring outage. You have to believe in that group.

"We have played just two months of a six-month season. We are a third of the way through a season, and one of those months was really good. The last four or five weeks have been poor. So we must try and maintain the perspective that we are going to hit. If we don't, of course, we will look to upgrade our team. The seeds of an offense that was sixth in scoring is there. We just haven't got it going yet.”

The Cubs have hit 60 homers, which ranks 17th in MLB, in 61 games. The long ball missing from their offensive formula on a consistent manner has bothered Hoyer.

"I certainly don't think we have shown the firepower we need to,” Hoyer said. “(Last Thursday) in Milwaukee, we hit three homers. But we need to do a lot more of that. That has been a big part of it. Any type of scoring with men on base has just not been there. Let's face it, multi-homer games help you win. Sunday's game was a perfect example – Cincinnati had a three-run homer, and we didn't hit any. I think we have more power to come. You need to be able to homer at the right times. You need to be able to score in bunches. In too many of the games, we have scored too few runs early and had to try and rally too late. You must put pressure on the opposing manager and get into that bad part of a bullpen. We hope with the calendar turning to June we can get the offense back on track.”
