The Chicago Cubs have a catching problem. Miguel Amaya and Yan Gomes simply aren't getting it done for a team that needs all hands on deck. External options such as Danny Jansen and Elias Diaz have been hot names among trade rumors, but one backstop hasn't been mentioned much.

Connor Wong is enjoying a productive season for the middling Boston Red Sox. The last remaining member from the Mookie Betts trade, Wong has provided Boston with stability behind the plate this season.

Sitting at 33-33, the Red Sox are treading water this season. It remains to be seen if they'll buy or sell at the trade deadline, but that shouldn't preclude the Cubs from opening a dialogue with former friend Craig Breslow.

The Cubs roster has quite several holes this season, and the catcher position has been lacking on both sides of the ball. Something has to be done about it quickly.

The Cubs' willingness to engage for external help is encouraging. With the trade deadline around the corner, the Cubs need to do all they can if they want to turn things around. Wong may provide an affordable upgrade via the trade market.

Breslow, the Red Sox' Chief Baseball Officer, is familiar with the Cubs' farm system. It's reasonable to believe that he and Jed Hoyer remain in contact.

Whatever the Cubs decide to do, they need to address their catching situation. Their future at the position remains bleak for a team with such high aspirations. Defense is a plus, but offense is sorely needed for this roster.

Connor Wong may not be the North Siders' long-term solution behind the plate, but he can provide some stability like he's doing right now. In desperate need of a jolt to climb back up the standings, the Cubs should be open to all potential upgrades.

With MLB's expanded playoffs and the Cubs' residence in an attainable NL Central division, Hoyer and Co. are still in a prime position to strike. It's now on them to take advantage of a golden opportunity.
