After Tuesday's meltdown by Hector Neris , it's become clearer that the Chicago Cubs must explore bullpen additions at the 2024 MLB trade deadline.

Entering the season, many expected Adbert Alzolay to continue his ascension in the closer role, but things have deteriorated quickly. With no solid depth among the relief corps, the Cubs have had to rely on the veteran Neris to hold it down.

Even though he's pitched some solid outings , the 34-year-old was meant to be the Cubs' set-up man. But with no depth behind him, Neris was forced into ninth-inning duties out of necessity.

By adding someone with experience, the Cubs' bullpen would receive a big boost. Los Angeles Angels' closer Carlos Estevez might just fit the bill.

At 25-41, the Angels appear to be sellers this season. After many seasons of underachieving, trading several of their intriguing roster pieces is likely in the Halos' best interest.

Estevez's 4.01 ERA may seem uninspiring, but the right-hander has rebounded nicely from early-season struggles . If he can continue his upward trajectory, the Cubs could have a solid option to close out games.

In the final season of a two-year contract, targeting Estevez would afford the Cubs some flexibility moving forward and perhaps a lower cost to acquire the 31-year-old's services. Given the circumstances, the Angels should be willing to part with their closer if it means acquiring assets for the future.

Like every closer, Estevez has endured his share of ups and downs. But the Cubs need as much help as they can get in their bullpen, and a lesser commitment attached to Esteves fits with how the team operates.

Hector Neris returning to the setup role could pay dividends if the Cubs can lessen his burden and add a closer. Jed Hoyer and Co. need to execute roster upgrades soon or else the Cubs will be out of contention before they know it.
