As the Chicago Cubs continue to walk the line of mediocrity, they've been plagued by lackluster production from Miguel Amaya and Yan Gomes . The North Siders' catching situation isn't adequate for a team that should be hell-bent on making the postseason.

Jed Hoyer did a lot of doubling down this season, and the catching position has been one of his many misses in 2024.

Even with Moises Ballesteros climbing up the system, it'll still take some time until he's MLB-ready. In the immediate future, the Cubs should look for an affordable veteran catcher. One who recently hit the market fits the criteria of what the team usually pounces on.

Tomas Nido Is on the Market

With Francisco Alvarez returning, the New York Mets decided to part ways with longtime catcher Tomas Nido. The 30-year-old is having a solid season defensively and would represent a major upgrade to a dismal Cubs' catching corps.

The Cubs have made it clear that they value defense up the middle. Their middle infield tandem is solidified with Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson, but they need a solid catcher to help execute what they've made part of their DNA.

With the Mets releasing him on Monday, Nido is available to a Cubs' team that prides itself on production at a discount. The Puerto Rican backstop isn't well-known for offense , but he's still producing better than Amaya and Gomes at the plate.

Both of the Cubs' catching options have been so lackluster that even Nido's negative WAR would be an instant upgrade should he replace Gomes. The cost to add him would be minimal when taken into perspective.

With Nido now a free agent, the Cubs wouldn't need to relinquish any of their assets to acquire him. He profiles as a backup catcher but could start for the Cubs given their current outlook.

Chicago is hovering around .500 right now, and it's unclear how Jed Hoyer will approach the MLB trade deadline. Signing Nido wouldn't necessarily tip their hand regarding which direction they'll go.
