Jon Heyman: Marlins closer Tanner Scott is a good fit for Cubs but would require an 'overpay' on trade market

(670 The Score) The Cubs fell to a season-worst five games under .500 with a disappointing 7-6 loss to the Giants on Monday at Wrigley Field, where struggling closer Hector Neris allowed a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning.

The Cubs have blown 16 saves this season, the most in the National League. Neris is responsible for four of those blown saves. The struggles of Neris and this bullpen underscore the Cubs’ need to improve before the trade deadline if they intend to make a push for the playoffs.

With that in mind, Marlins closer Tanner Scott is a good fit for the Cubs on the trade market, Jon Heyman of MLB Network and the New York Post said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Tuesday morning, but his inflated market will drive up the trade cost.

“That’s the one who really does make sense for any team looking for a closer,” Heyman said. “Now, they’re going to have a lot of competition, because he has been great this year and was great last year. Lefty closer. I mean, Philly, Baltimore I hear are interested, Yankees, Dodgers. So, it’s not going to be easy. You’re going to have to overpay. But at this point, if you want to be in the race, that’s what you’ll have to do.”

Scott, 29, has a 1.86 ERA and eight saves in 29 innings for the Marlins, who are in last place in the NL East and already declared their intention to sell off players prior to the trade deadline when they sent infielder Luis Arraez to the Padres in early May.

The Cubs host the Giants on Tuesday in the second game of their three-game series at Wrigley Field. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. on 670 The Score, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the 670 airwaves or by downloading the Audacy app.
