It's been nearly two years since Matt Foster has thrown a pitch for the Chicago White Sox. A string of injuries during Spring Training 2023 led to Tommy John surgery , but the right-hander is now on the mend.

Foster recently joined the Arizona Complex League White Sox for a rehab assignment and pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in his debut.

Before his lengthy absence, Foster displayed flashes of mid-leverage ability mixed with struggles. The Valley, Alabama native notched a 2.20 ERA across 28.2 innings during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, which was his rookie season. Foster's ERA ballooned to 6.00 in 2021 before he logged a 4.40 mark in a career-high 45 innings the following season.

A 20th-round pick of the White Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft, Foster is under club control through the 2026 season. If his rehab goes smoothly, he could return to the South Siders' bullpen as a low-cost option.

While the White Sox play out a lost 2024 season, they still need to cover innings, which may be an ideal scenario for Foster as he looks to reacclimate himself to big-league action.
