Here at On Tap Sports Net, we know what we're talking about. Just days before the move, our Chicago Cubs writer Bobby Foster suggested that Tomas Nido would be an upgrade at catcher after he was released by the New York Mets on Monday. On Wednesday, the Cubs must've listened.

According to reports , Yan Gomes has been designated for assignment and the team is signing Nido. Nido will be an upgrade at the catching position despite being an overall average player. However, that highlights how bad the Cubs' catching position has been in 2024.

On the season, Nido is slashing .229/.261/.361 with three home runs and eight RBIs in just 32 games. Amaya will make the start for the Cubs on Wednesday, but there is a good chance that Nido will get a start or two against his former team when the Mets venture to Wrigley Field for a three-game series starting on Friday.

As noted, Nido's numbers aren't overwhelming, but he is still an upgrade over Yan Gomes. Gomes had an incredible season with the Cubs in 2023, but it felt like the magic ran out in 2024. After slashing .267/.315/.408 in 2023, Gomes was slashing .154/.179/.242 in 2024. The time was now for the Cubs to upgrade the catching position.

The Cubs conclude their series with the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday and have an off day on Thursday. Then, the Mets come to town for three games beginning on Friday at Wrigley Field, including a bout on Sunday Night Baseball .
