Ahead of NHL free agency, the Chicago Blackhawks are taking care of some internal housekeeping. On Thursday, the Blackhawks signed forward Cole Guttman to a one-year, two-way contract extension. The pact carries a $775K salary cap hit and runs through the 2024-25 season.

Guttman appeared in 27 NHL games this past season and recorded eight points (four goals, four assists). The 25-year-old spent most of the season with the AHL Rockford IceHogs, with whom he scored 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 39 games.

A sixth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017, Guttman initially joined the Blackhawks on a two-year contract in August 2022. The Northridge, California native was set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, but Tuesday's contract extension locks him into the Blackhawks plans for the 2024-25 season.

If Guttman can improve his defensive game, he should be in line for more opportunities with Chicago as he returns to the organization for a third season.
