The Chicago Cubs' plans at the trade deadline remain vague, but a recent rumor indicates they may be leaning toward the "buy" category. While offense and bullpen struggles make them primary areas of need, the Cubs may be targeting an unlikely player of interest. Per veteran reporter George Ofman , the Cubs have interest in Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Jack Flaherty.

A former Cardinal, Flaherty had some of his best seasons in St. Louis before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2023. Things didn't go according to plan and Flaherty was ineffective with a 6.75 in nine appearances for the O's. Following the season, he was able to test free agency for the first time in his career.

The rebuilding Detroit Tigers took a chance and signed him to a one-year deal this past offseason. So far, it's been general manager Scott Harris' best move of the winter as the righty has turned things around in the Motor City. The Tigers are 5.5 games back of a wild-card spot and will likely sell at the deadline, where the 28-year-old should net the team a quality return.

    Why Jack Flaherty?

While the Cubs' connection to Jack Flaherty comes as a surprise, it actually makes a lot of sense. Flaherty is a rental option, meaning the Cubs won't have to break the bank to land him. With a quality farm system, Chicago has the necessary resources to pull the trigger.

Additionally, a key relationship between the Tigers and Cubs exists as Scott Harris spent seven seasons working under Jed Hoyer in Chicago's front office.

Flaherty is enjoying an impressive season as he owns a 2.92 ERA through 14 starts. The bullpen has been a sore spot for the Cubs, so adding another starter with the ability to cover more innings could make sense as the team looks to break out of its funk and surge up the National League standings.
