Parkins & Spiegel: Confidence, belief in Cubs is 'extremely, extremely low'

(670 The Score) Score afternoon host Matt Spiegel’s confidence in the Cubs is at a new low.

Spiegel is as despondent about the Cubs as he has been all season after they lost two of three games to the surging Mets at Wrigley Field over the weekend. The Cubs sit at 37-41 entering play Monday, trailing the NL Central-leading Brewers by eight games.

“I have never ever in this particular season had my confidence and my belief in the Chicago Cubs be lower than what it is right now," Spiegel said on his show Monday afternoon. "It is extremely, extremely low. This is a team in a stretch where they were supposed to make hay. They were (28-28) on the 30th of May after losing two of three in Milwaukee. They had been exposed right there as clearly inferior to what looked then and still does look like as the class of the division.

“But even at that point at (28-28) after losing two of three, it was like, ‘OK, they have 25 games in a row coming against teams that are under .500.’ And they are 21 games into that stretch, and their record is 9-12.

Spiegel pointed out the schedule gets much harder for the Cubs soon. After a four-game series against the under-.500 Giants, the Cubs face the Brewers and the MLB-best Phillies.

“This was the month and time for them to make hay,” Spiegel said. “Yes, the calendar says there is still time, but man, they do not look like a good baseball team. And the schedule gave them an opportunity they haven’t taken (advantage of).”

“They’re a middling team playing other middling teams and they’re just getting out-middled right now,” co-host Marshall Harris added.
