Mully & Haugh: It's 'disappointing' that Cubs haven't been more aggressive to address weaknesses

(670 The Score) The Cubs bullpen blew its 17th save of the season Monday, when left-hander Drew Smyly walked in the game-ending run in the bottom of the ninth of Chicago’s 5-4 loss at San Francisco. Reliever Colten Brewer and Smyly combined to allow three runs in the ninth inning as the Cubs suffered a loss that was yet another contender for their worst of the season.

“It’s been disappointing that they haven’t been more aggressive based on what they haven’t been offensively and based on the 17 blown saves,” Score morning host David Haugh said. “You can’t blame injuries on all of that inconsistency. You can’t ignore how bad they have been as a relief corps.”

Haugh pointed to the bullpen in particular as needing reinforcement. The Cubs have a 4.47 ERA from their bullpen, which ranks 23rd in MLB.

The Cubs are three games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League, but they’d have to pass seven teams in the bunched-up standings to fight their way back into a that last playoff spot.

“The sense of urgency is much, much greater outside their offices than it is within the board room there, the conference room,” Haugh said. “I think that’s becoming a bigger problem.”
