It's been a terrible season for the Chicago Cubs. Nothing is working on offense when nobody's hitting the ball over the fence. Among the North Siders' expected power threats, Seiya Suzuki has been disapointing and Cody Bellinger has been meh .
The Cubs lack a true star to take them over the edge as they're currently comprised of a supporting cast that needs a lead actor to set the tone. With the 2024 MLB trade deadline approaching, Jed Hoyer will have ample opportunities to solve this issue.
On the South Side of town, the White Sox own the worst record in baseball and will undoubtedly be sellers at the deadline. It might make sense for the crosstown rivals to once again come together on a trade. This time, Luis Robert Jr. is the right guy for the job.
The 26-year-old has been the brightest star in an otherwise black hole of a roster. Injuries have been his weakness, but there's no denying he has the generational talent required to lead a team.
The Cubs have typically operated in a risk-averse fashion, but they need to be bold moving forward. Since Hoyer took over, he's been rather cautious in constructing a roster. When the Cubs needed to spend on a shortstop two offseasons ago, he opted for the cheapest of the four options.
The Cubs aren't taking advantage of the luxuries at their disposal. Despite operating in the country's third-largest market, they haven't displayed the eagerness to use that to their advantage in a division of small-market teams.
Trading for Robert Jr. would be a bold move to break that mold, and he makes for a quality fit. The Cuban center fielder is young enough for the Cubs to build around as he's still on a team-friendly contract , something Hoyer greatly values. If the Cubs want to continue down the path of " intelligent spending ," why not take advantage by adding a premium talent at a fraction of the cost?
The Cubs' lineup consists of mostly contact hitters. Now is the time to stray from the norm and add a player whose greatest strength is the long ball . There's still time to add to this roster, but the clock is ticking.
