Once again, the Chicago Cubs find even more ways to lose games. It is a major trait of bad teams. If you cannot hold leads then you are simply not that good to begin with. It seems that every one of these games follows a template.

The starting pitcher goes out and has a great start and the offense scores just enough for the other team to overcome it and win by the slimmest of margins. It's rinse and repeat with this team. That's all they do and at this point, there's barely a reason to continue watching.

But here we are still watching a train wreck of a season unfold. The outcome is predictable and it seems there is no escape from it.

    Tale of the Tape

With Jameson Taillon on the mound, the Cubs were looking to build off their recent victory against the Giants. A series against the Brewers was going to be difficult. To start, the Cubs had runners at first and second with nobody out. Now was the time to capitalize against a division rival. But like clockwork, the team continues to kill its own rallies.

Cody Bellinger promptly hit into a double play and Seiya Suzuki struck out. A big waste of an opportunity right there for a team in desperate need of production.

Jameson Taillon gave a solid performance on Friday. He was able to get through the first eight batters without allowing a hit. It was a perfect time for the Cubs to get things going on offense.

Seiya Suzuki got the Cubs on the board first with his 10th home run on the season. To add to it, Dansby Swanson plated an RBI single of his own to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning.

For any normal team, a lead like that is a sign of good things to come. With this team in its current state, it was inevitable that it would disappear fast.

As usual, the lead came and went as Jackson Chourio promptly unloaded the bases with his first career grand slam. The Brewers took a 4-2 lead and they never had to look back.

The Cubs were given a gift in the top of the 6th inning. Cody Bellinger made it to first off of an error by starter Colin Rea. They should have taken advantage of this miscue but instead countered with one of their most egregious errors on the season.

When it rains it pours. Ian Happ hit a flyout that became a double play thanks to Bellinger not knowing how many outs there were on the base paths.

In many ways, it sums up the 2024 Cubs as a whole. As the team's highest-paid player, this was an embarrassing blunder.

Another rally was brewing in the 7th inning as the bases were full with 2 outs. Craig Counsell made the decision to pinch hit for Michael Busch against a lefty pitcher. It didn't make a difference as Patrick Wisdom hit a flyout to effectively kill any hope that was remaining.

The offense did nothing else for the remainder of this game. If anything, they made it easier for closer Trevor Megill to close this one out stress-free.

    Tale of the Tape

This team is a giant embarrassment in every sense of the word. The amount of holes that exist on this team is an inditement of Jed Hoyer's lack of action in the offseason. He dug this hole and he should be held responsible for it.

Nothing was done this offseason to improve this team. It was simply replacing Marcus Stroman with Shota Imanaga and bringing Cody Bellinger back into the fold. With stars like Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani available, the Cubs were content in spending on the clearance rack.

As the only big market team in the NL Central, it's negligence that they did not use this benefit to their advantage. The Chicago Cubs should not avoid playing at the deep end of the pool. Jed Hoyer's unwillingness to spend at the very top of the market will prove to be his downfall.

    What's On Tap Next?

The Cubs will look to change things up on Saturday as they try to avoid another series loss. Game two of the series will feature Justin Steele on the mound against impressive righty Tobias Myers. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:10 PM CDT and the game will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network.
