(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hundreds of thousands of people will gather on Chicago's North Side on Sunday for the annual Pride Parade, and Chicago Police say they're taking all necessary measures to keep things safe.

Chicago Police and other officials spoke on Friday at the Center on Halsted, and say the Pride Parade often gets threats, all of which are taken seriously, and all days off for Police Officers have been canceled.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling says the most trouble regarding the parade usually happens long after the marching has stopped.

“What we've seen in the past with those large gatherings late at night, is that there are acts of violence. And when those acts of violence occur, what we've also seen is people who just decide to converge upon that area and carry out more acts of violence,” Snelling said.

“I'm just here to tell you right now that's not going to be tolerated.”

“Our city is a haven, not just this space and this street, but our entire city is a haven for those who are experiencing LGBT discrimination from around the world,”
44th Ward Alderman Bennett Lawson said.

“And as we welcome folks here this weekend, I think we want to remember that. We want to keep it safe.”
