Cubs as deadline sellers? 'I still don't see it' says prominent analyst

The Chicago Cubs may not be sellers at the deadline, contrary to popular belief.

With Cubs president Jed Hoyer communicating over the weekend that Chicago lacks the fiscal capacity to enhance its lineup, many penciled the Cubs in as sellers.

Chicago's 39-45 record (last in the National League Central) and plethora of injuries only lend credence to the whispers that Hoyer is trying to move guys like Cody Bellinger.

Not everyone sees the Cubs selling, however.

The Athletic’s senior writer Ken Rosenthal appeared on FOX Sports on Saturday denying Chicago's plan to sell.

"I still don't see it," Rosenthal said in response to a question about the Cubs being sellers. "We're a month away ... (The Cubs) have the exact same record that they had last year at this time. So, last year what happened? They won 10 of 12 at one point in July (and) became buyers ... This year, could they trade Cody Bellinger if things go badly? Yeah, they could do that, but they've had rotation injuries, they'd had bullpen injuries, they've had 19 one-run losses ... their offense has been a disappointment. We've seen any number of teams turn around in the last couple of weeks ... the Cubs are thinking maybe they're next."

Rosenthal's report comes as a surprise, and if Chicago is truly banking on an epic turnaround, it needs to start hitting immediately.
