The Chicago Cubs came into Sunday with one of their finest wins of the season on Saturday. Things were starting to click on both sides of the baseball. Sunday's game was going to be evermore crucial for the team to finally make some headway in the NL Central.
But in true fashion, the Cubs found a way to once again fumble their chances and give one of their worst efforts on the season.
Kyle Hendricks was looking to continue his momentum and finally put most of his terrible 2024 season behind him. After this start, it maybe time to finally be done with him on the roster.
Tale of the Tape
Things were looking good at the start once again for the Cubs. A lead-off homer from Nico Hoerner put the team up 1-0 in the 1st inning. To hit it off Freddy Peralta was a great sign that things may be different this time.
In that same inning, Cody Bellinger reached on an infield single. His hit was the final one that the Cubs got on Sunday. An absolutely embarrassing display from an offense that has given quite a few already this season.
The Cubs were going to need Kyle Hendricks to continue his rebound against a division rival. With injuries mounting, there was really nobody else that the team could count on heading in.
Things were going okay for the veteran until a disastrous 4th inning turned the tides permanently to the Brewers. Christian Yelich got things going with a two-run homer that took the lead away from the Cubs.
An RBI single from Sal Frelick put the score at 3-1. Things were heading south quickly and the hope for the Cubs was that Hendricks could stop the bleeding. As usual, things got even worse thanks to Brice Turang.
At that point, Turang's grand slam could be seen as one of the final death blows of a terrible Cubs season. It was a perfect summary of what this season looks like.
Hendricks is a pitcher that is clearly past his prime, but the front office still thinks he has value. The grand slam comes from a player that the Brewers have given steady playing time to ever since his debut.
Jed Hoyer should take better notes at exactly what is making the Milwaukee Brewers such a successful organization. Taking their manager is clearly not enough to copy their style.
Kyle Hendricks left this game allowing seven runs on the day that all came in the same inning. From then on, Craig Counsell went to his bullpen looking for some length and was able to get it. The hope here is that it isn't completely worn out for their next series. The Cubs ultimately fell 7-1 on Sunday.
Takeaways
The Cubs are done in 2024. At this point, there is no more searching for answers because it's clear that they don't exist on this roster. It was crystal clear this past offseason that this team needed more if they were going to take the next step.
It's hard to even be mad at this point. The team is clearly not any good and nothing is going to save them at this point of the season.
As major upgrades were there for the taking, Jed Hoyer took it upon himself to hibernate for most of the winter after the hiring of Craig Counsell. Major decisions need to be made at the top for once.
Jed Hoyer should be on the hot seat at this point. His unwillingness to use the big market resources that he has is an act of negligence on the growth of this franchise.
Takeaways
The Cubs will thankfully have an off day on Monday to give themselves and fans a break. Hayden Wesneski will take the mound against rookie Michael Mercado and the Philadelphia Phillies from Wrigley Field on Tuesday. First pitch is at 7:05 PM CDT on Marquee Sports Network and TBS.
